Come Holy Spirit!  Today, we celebrate the beautiful Solemnity of Pentecost.  Today we celebrate the Birthday of the Catholic Church!  Just as Jesus promised His Apostles as He was ascending into Heaven, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit upon them, His Blessed Mother, and the other disciples gathered together in the Upper Room 9 days later.  This is the day that we celebrate today.  We have already received the Gift of the Holy Spirit at our Baptisms.  We were baptized in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  We also received the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit (wisdom, knowledge, counsel, understanding, fear of the Lord, fortitude, and piety).  At Confirmation, these 7 Gifts were deepened within us, and we were given extra “power” to go forth and bear witness to our faith in Jesus Christ.  After Pentecost, we see the Apostles completely changed.  They were no longer afraid to speak about their relationship with Jesus, as well as invite others to a relationship with their Lord.  Each Apostle allowed the Holy Spirit to work within and through them, even to the point of being killed for their faith in Christ, thus dying as martyrs.  May the Apostles, our Blessed Mother, and all the Saints intercede for us this day as we too ask the Holy Spirit to work in and through us, especially in a world that is in desperate need of Jesus Christ.
