As I was preparing this Sunday’s homily and focusing on Jesus’ words in John 14:23-29, I felt especially drawn to the whole tone of His discourse with His Apostles. Jesus was basically preparing them for His upcoming Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension into Heaven. He wanted to reassure them that He would not leave them “orphaned”, and without His Presence. This begs the question, “Is Jesus still with us here on earth even though He isn’t present physically? The answer to this question is “yes”. First and foremost, Jesus is with us in the Holy Eucharist. At every Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the bread and wine is changed into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. At Holy Communion, we receive the Body and Blood of Jesus. When we enter into any Catholic Church, Jesus is truly present in the Tabernacle. Secondly, Jesus is present to us today in His Body the Church. Jesus founded the Catholic Church. He still teaches us through the Teachings of the Church, and these teachings with regard to faith and morals, are preserved from error (“gift of infallibility”) by the Holy Spirit. For example, Jesus is truly present in His Body and Blood – this is a matter of faith that has never changed and will never change, regardless of what individual Catholics may believe. With matters of morality, Jesus has always taught through His Body – the Church, that every human life is sacred from the moment of conception to natural death, as well as the truth that Marriage is only between one man and one woman. These truths of our Catholic Faith that Jesus Himself taught will never change, regardless of public opinion or policy. Finally, Jesus is truly with us in the Maternal intercession of Mary His Mother. At the foot of the Cross, He gave us the gift of Mary as our Mother through the Apostle John. When we love Mary, we are also loving Jesus. Is Jesus still with us? YES!!!
